Today is Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day. It’s about more than surgery, it’s about choice, confidence, and control over your own body. Options after mastectomy include:1-4 • Implant-based breast reconstruction: potentially quicker recovery compared to autologous tissue based reconstruction, no donor site surgery; may be done in stages with a tissue expander. • Autologous (Tissue Flap) reconstruction: your own tissue for a more natural look and feel compared to breast implants. • Aesthetic Flat Closure: a smooth, flat chest contour. What’s new in breast reconstruction after mastectomy?3 • Oncoplastic surgery which combines cancer removal with plastic surgery techniques to reshape the breast during lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. • Autologous fat grafting which uses fat from another part of the body to correct breast asymmetry or refine reconstruction results. BRA Day exists so every patient knows their choices before making them. However you move forward, your decision is yours, and it is worth celebrating. Reach out to discuss options suitable for your medical condition. References: 1.
